Give memories not things for an unforgettable Christmas
Do you have a Bucket List? Does your loved one have one? Have you ever asked? Why not? This Christmas give something nothing can take away, not time, erosion, or fads. Give your person the gift of an unforgettable experience, not a material possession. I’ve said and done this for years with my family. Instead of giving gifts, which they will outgrow and forget, I take them to places and do memorable things.
Most of us want a grand week-long vacation, but we also know that it isn’t always possible. Day trips and date nights seem more feasible with most of our crazy lives. You don’t need a ton of money or more than a few hours to make memories for a lifetime. This Christmas give your loved one a romantic experience without having to pack a bag or break the bank.

11 Unforgettable Bucket List Christmas Gift Ideas for Couples
Attend the Lantern Festival
This seems so romantic, I have not done this but would love to soon. This is on my personal Bucket List! Buy tickets now for a future event and plan a whole day around it. Groupon usually has deals on this event months in advance and very reasonably priced. With enough notice, you can both request the day off and plan a romantic and unforgettable date night. This Christmas give a bottle of wine, save for that day, tickets, and a note. Be specific and a little dirty with that note!
A Day of Wine Tasting
Vineyards are exploding in popularity and locations around the world right now. Most vineyards offer tastings and with enough vineyards, there’s usually a touring van willing to drive you for a fee. This is my favorite way to go wine tasting but can be expensive and not available in all areas. As an alternative, I suggest doing a “wine crawl” and Ubering home, of course. Most towns have an area with several bars and restaurants within a few blocks of each other. For Christmas grab a $10-15 gift card to each of those establishments, just enough for two drinks, and plan an evening trying different wines at each.
Do a “Make at Home Kit”
There are a variety of DIY kits available at most craft stores and a ton available on Amazon. The kits vary from soaps, candles, exotic dinners, crafts, scrapbooks, model planes, beer, bread, pasta, science experiments, etc. I’m sure you can find something you’d both in interested in for one evening. This way you spend an entire evening doing something completely different and will be a night remembered for years. A good puzzle will always work in a pinch too.
Sign up for a DIY class
If DIY at home isn’t your thing, sign up for a local class. There are a ton of classes offered in soap making, perfume making, pottery painting, glass blowing, and many others. Another option is a Painting with a Twist class, super simple and they have classes almost every day. You bring your own wine, liquor, they have all the paint and show you how to paint step by step. Honestly, I’m no an artist at all and all of mine have come out wonderfully.
Sign up for a cooking class together
I personally love taking cooking classes, most are not expensive. I’ve taken a few where I cook along with the cook but my favorites are the ones I just drink and watch. The cooks are working the kitchens on closed days and explain everything as they prepare several courses while students watch. A lot of Community Colleges offer unaccredited cooking classes, meaning you don’t need to be a student to attend.
Start a Succulent/Herb Garden together
Get your hands dirty together. A gift card to a local garden center with an explanation of what it is for; pictures from Pinterest may help explain too. Another idea is to pick up all of the supplies and wrap in a large box, just be sure for not too long, plants don’t die without sunlight. These gardens need to stay in the house for the first few months so it’s perfect to get some greenery and life into the house.
Schedule a couples massage, manicure, and pedicure
Even if this isn’t your thing, fake it for a day. I mean who couldn’t use softer hands and feet, or maybe some stress relief? This can get expensive, try package deals on Groupon or the local spa websites. If you prefer, buy massage oil, nail polish, a soaking tub, and scented Epsom salts and do it at home.
Make Piece of Artwork for your home.
Pinterest has a ton of ideas for beautiful DIY artwork. Recently, I turned a beloved vacation shirt into a canvas piece and it looks great on my wall. There are some simple projects on Pinterest and YouTube requiring only permanent markers, canvas, alcohol, a little time and creativity. For this Christmas, buy all the supplies and set aside some time during the holidays to complete.

Have a romantic evening under the stars
Pack a snack, individual tiny bottles of wine are easiest, and a blanket and go outside on a clear night. The backyard is fine too- it doesn’t have to be complicated. Lastly, sit quietly while holding hands or talk each other’s ears off while gazing up at the night sky.
Make a fort in the living room and watch your favorite movie together
Almost everyone has extra blankets, sheets, towels, throws, pillows, or couch cushions, to make a fort in the living room. Drape one over the TV to make it enclosed to block out the outside world. Turn off your phones, close the computers, make popcorn and watch a favorite movie or two. Fall asleep there if it’s big enough.
Drive around and look at Christmas Lights
Finally, this one is my favorite, free or not. Try packing hot Chocolate in a thermos to sip on while looking at local Christmas lights, drive or walk around and enjoy the lights like a child again. Be extra romantic and end up at the place you first met, first kissed, or said I love you, to show them you remember the small things.
If you want to impress me, don’t buy me something expensive to sit on a shelf. Instead, teach me something, take me somewhere I’ve never been, feed me something new, make me think in a new way, or fulfill one of my Bucket List items. Don’t buy me something that will fade or disappear, give me an experience I will never forget. Showing Effort is a big deal and all of these gift ideas show a lot of effort without having to think too much or break the bank.
